Feng Shui

What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui is an ancient art and science developed over 3,000 years ago in China. Originally, it was the exclusive knowledge of the court meteorologists of Imperial China. Thus, Feng Shui originated from ancient medicine, geomancy, astrology and other esoteric arts.

Feng Shui is based on the Taoist  understanding of nature, particularly on the idea that the land is alive and filled with the Chi, or "life energy". This energy is in every living and non living thing. The Chi affects us, connects us with our surroundings and is in a constant state of change. The ancient Chinese believed that this energy could either make or break the kingdom, so to speak.

"Feng" means "wind" and "shui" means "water"
.  In Chinese culture gentle wind and clear water have always been associated with good harvest and good health. Thus "good feng shui" came to mean good livelihood, wellbeing, flourishing and fortune, while "bad feng shui" came to mean hardship, lack and misfortune.

The main tools used in a
Feng Shui analysis are the Compass
Luo Pan and the Ba-Gua.

The Ba-Gua is an octagonal grid containing the symbols of the I Ching, the ancient oracle on which Feng Shui is based. The Ba-Gua represents cyclic energies of the Universe. Its literal translation is "eight houses". It consists of an octagon with Taiji in the centre, representing the Earth. Each of the eight sides corresponds to a trigram, points to a cardinal direction and corresponds to a number, an element, a station, a color, a part of the body, a member of the family and other aspects of life.

The Compass Luo Pan like an ordinary compass is used to precisely determine the orientation of a structure relative to magnetic North. The Luo Pan is a complex system of eleven rings, which show the unique characteristics for a given orientation. The Compass uses the sequence of the movement of the Chi and Later Heaven Bagua (a dynamic Bagua where the energies and the aspects of each trigram flow towards the following). It is allows to Feng Shui practitioners precisely determine the nature of a structure in many different dimensions.

The Chi - Life energy

Feng Shui Good Energy, called Sheng Chi, is the bright, uplifting, refreshing energy. "Sheng" translated from Chinese means upward moving energy.
Sheng Chi, takes many forms as:

   - the energy you experience when you walk by the beach and your body feels uplifted by good energy (a high amount of negative ions beneficial to your health);

   - the energy you experience in a lush forest (Japanese have the expression of "wood bathing"), as well as anywhere where nature is thriving;

   - in a harmonious interior environment with a good flow of Chi high quality air and natural light.

The opposite of Sheng Chi (good energy) are the low and harmful energies - called Sha Chi and Si Chi.

Sha Chi is known as "killing", or "attacking" sharp energy.

For example, this bad energy can be created outside by the sharpness of a structure (man-made or natural) that points to any of your windows. The feng shui of a house at the end of a T-junction will tend to be bad and accumulate Sha Chi because of the strong and constant attacking energy flow to its main door.
Sha Chi
energy
can also be created inside the building.

For example, when a sharp wall angle, called poison arrow, is pointing at your bed, there is a constant emission of attacking energy directed at your body. In both cases the proximity is important; the further the attacking element is located from you or your house, the lesser its bad feng shui influence.

Si Chi is low, decaying energy, the energy that feels lifeless and dying. This bad feng shui energy can lead to illness and depression for those who are exposed to it for a long amount of time.

Si Chi, or low feng shui energy, can be found outside (for example in the land where the energy of the human massacre, or overwhelming human tragedies, is still potent) or inside the buildings that have strong geopathic stress.

Feng shui studies the way Chi moves and acts as an invisible force determining the kind of energy that objects and everything that surrounds us contain. When we use Feng Shui we work to enhance the Sheng Chi (good energy) and deflect or neturalise the Sha Chi and Si Chi (negative energies).

All the changes in the Chi moving and circulation depend on the Five Elements.

The
theories of the five Feng Shui elements, as well as Yin and Yang, are some of the basic aspects of a Feng Shui analysis that come from Taoism.

The principle of the Five Elements

Feng shui handles five main elements in order to achieve harmony and balance in any space. These five feng shui elements are: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water.

According to Chinese traditions, everything in the Universe is constantly changing and interacting and that happens through these five main elements. Therefore, when wishing to harmonize a place according to feng shui, these elements must be properly employed according to their characteristics and effects.

The Wood Element

One first feng shui element is wood, which has the Chinese name of Mu. Wood represents innovation, creativity and birth, and it is a sociable element. Wood symbolizes years of human childhood. The colors of the Wood Element are green and teal, like tree leaves.

The shape of the Wood Element is rectangular. This element corresponds to  the east direction. By placing this element at a strategic spot in any space, you would be adding all of which it represents.

The Fire Element

Another feng shui element is fire, Huo in Chinese. Fire represents passion, emotion, and high energy. It symbolizes and brings activity, enthusiasm and energy to the places where it can be found. Fire is represented by hot colours, like red, crimson, scarlet, orange, deep purple, and pink.It is a warm element that must be treated with measure since too much of it can destroy what surrounds it.  Fire corresponds with the south direction, and symbolizes the puberty years.

Actual Fire Element objects are hot and blazing, like burning candles or a roaring fireplace.
The shape of the Fire Element is triangular, like a flame.

The Earth Element

A next element is earth, called Tu in China. This element symbolizes stability, patience and honesty. Earth is the Element that grounds you and makes you feel reliably and balanced. The colors of the Earth Element are brown like the soil, yellow like the sun, terracotta like clay. It is a methodic element that can also become demanding, and is ideal for everything that is related with real estate and inheritances.

The shape of the Earth Element is square. Earth is representative of the early youth years.

The Metal Element
Metal or Jin in Chinese is another main
But it can also represent a knife or cutting metal and be destructive through it. Metal is the Element that brings strength and clarity into your life. If you need to focus on a project, add a Metal object to your surroundings. The colors of the Metal Element are the metallic colors like gold and silver, plus all of the pastel and light colors like white, gray, and pastels.

The shape of this element is round like a metal coin. West is the direction of the Metal Element. This feng shui element symbolizes the adult years of human life.

The Water Element

Water, called Shui in Chinese, is the last feng shui element. Water is elemental for living, not only for humans but also animals and plants. It can be quiet or violent. It has a very important role among feng shui elements, and actually the name feng shui contains its name in it, meaning water and wind. Water is the Element that brings movement, flow, and relaxation into your life. Water mainly represents traveling and communications. But it also represents learning, arts and media. The colors of the Water Element are deep blues and black, as if you are looking into deep water.

The shape of the Water Element is anything that has a swirling or curving pattern that
resemblers moving water. This element symbolizes the old human years. Its direction is North.

Yin and Yang

Feng Shui is based on the principle of Yin and Yang. It is a universal idea of describing the interactions and interrelations of the natural forces that do occur in the world.
Yin and Yang expresses the evolution of all that exists on this Earth.

Polarity expressed through Yin and Yang is similar to a bipolar magnetic field. That is, it is of two parts: one creating an exertion and one receiving the exertion. Yang, representing heat rises on the left (or East) and reaches its peak at the top (South). Yin representing coolness descends on the right (West) and reaches its maximum at the bottom (North).

Yin is black, female, receptive, yielding, negative, and nurturing. It is associated with night, valleys, rivers, streams, water, metal, and earth.

Yang is white, male, active, dominating, positive, and initiating/creating. Yang is associated with day, mountains, hills, fire, wood, and air.

Yin and Yang always has the following characteristics:

Yin and Yang are opposing:

For example, winter is Yin to summer's Yang over the course of a year, and femininity is Yin to masculinity's Yang in human relationships.

Yin and Yang are rooted together:

Since yin and yang are created together in a single movement, they are bound together as parts of a mutual whole. A race with only men or only women would disappear in a single generation, but men and women together create new generations that allow the race they mutually create (and mutually come from) to survive. The interaction of the two gives birth to things.

Yin and Yang transform each other:

Thus, a seed will sprout from the earth and grow upwards towards the sky - an intrinsically Yang movement. Then when it reaches its full height, it will begin to weaken, and eventually will fall back to the earth in decay - an intrinsically Yin movement. Yin always contains the potential for Yang, and Yang for Yin.

Yin and Yang are balanced:

Yin-Yang is a dynamic equilibrium. Because they arise together they are always equal: if one disappears, the other must disappear as well, leaving emptiness. This is rarely immediately apparent, though, because Yang elements are clear and obvious while Yin elements are hidden and subtle.

The five elements of feng shui (water, wood, fire, earthl, metal) are made of Yin and Yang in precise amounts (e.g.: greater wood has less Yin than lesser wood, but not as much Yin as water, and so forth). Earth is a buffer, or an equilibrium achieved when the polarities cancel each other.

While the goal of Chinese medicine is to balance Yin and Yang in the body, the goal of feng shui has been described as aligning a city, site, building, or object with Yin-Yang force fields.

Feng Shui today

Feng Shui is not based on any religion, mysticism, or superstition. Rather it is a mathematical science. Feng Shui is based on four aspects: Building, Environment, People, and Time. Most authors and practitioners today utilize only the first two aspects, while leaving out the most important (although more complicated calculations) of People and Time. Just as the Earth is constantly moving and changing, so are the energies of Feng Shui. Modern science has shown that geomagnetics are in a constant flux. Feng Shui calculations show changing results based on the variables of building, people, time, and environment.

There is no fixed place for money, love, or study. Although the Chi for these objectives exists, they are found in different places in different buildings. It takes a qualified practitioner who knows how to uncover these locations.

Much has been said about the “cures” used in Feng Shui. Traditional Feng Shui does not prescribe any flutes, mirrors, charms, chants, or other mystical objects. Rather, a qualified practitioner only utilizes the five Chinese elements of Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water to bring a place into an energetic balance. These elements can take the form of many objects such as a brass pot, or an aquarium, but the actual remedies are still strictly the element. The objective of the remedies is to return a natural balance of the Chi (life energy) to a building. Feng Shui remedies are only based on the natural elements and not the objects themselves.

Feng Shui can be shown to be both a science and an art.

The Science of Feng Shui is the detailed analysis of the four aspects using mathematical calculations.

The Art of Feng Shui is the experience of how to best implement the remedies. How much, exactly where, and for how long, is the skills of a practiced Feng Shui master.

So Feng Shui is a complex body of knowledge that reveals how to balance the energies of any given space to assure good fortune and the health for people inhabiting it.

We hope that by applying Feng Shui to your surroundings you find that you can make better every aspect of your life.
